My name is Garrett. I hang on dA to comment on my friend's wicked rad art. I'm a pretty big metalhead, my Pandora station jumps around from like Suffocation to Sepultura to Skid Row, pretty wide tastes. Also like to build computers, I'm a die hard sports fan, and I like my cars, classic and newer. Artistically, I'm a fairly mediocre writer, but I'm working on it on and off, once I get to the point where I'm happy with something I'll post it here.

The motorcycle.

Mon Sep 7, 2009, 1:31 PM
So I want to get a motorcycle. I also want a job to pay for it. It sounds fun as hell, it'll give me something to do with Dad (if he ever wants to ride with me :V), and I figure the job will give me some extra money to toss into savings in addition to helping me pay for the motorcycle. Not only that, but I want a sport bike - there's something about riding a performance machine to its limit that sounds a hell of a lot more appealing to me than cruising around on a Harley.

Mom's cool with it if I get a job, Dad's pretty against it but I think he's realizing it's going to happen (one of the funnier moments today was him pulling up muscle cars on Craigslist and saying "HERE GET ONE OF THESE," hahahahahaha).

Either way, I'm looking at something small to learn on - I'd rather not kill myself just yet. I'm considering two options prominently here. The Kawasaki Ninja 250 (the gold standard for beginner bikes) or the Hyosung GT250R (newcomer to the scene in America, a little cheaper). I'd also get riding gear - helmet, jacket, gloves, some sort of pants, and boots. The main barrier to entry here is insurance - I can pay for the bike and gear no problem, especially if I get a job, but I'm not about to ride around with only liability coverage. Considering how young I am, this is going to suck for my wallet - hence the job. Any extra money I get will go into savings. About all I spend every week is what I spend at the restaurant on Thursdays.

I'm going to try to take a riding class sometime this month (there's one in about a week and a half in Lakeland over the weekend, going to try to get one of the last spots in that), and work on getting a job.

I'll toss you specs. Nothing special, but I'm not particularly fond of blowing more than a grand or so every few years on a computer. Built it last May, I think.

Antec Sonata III
Antec Earthwatts 500w
C2D E7200
Gigabyte EP35-DS3L (Don't remember the exact model name, think that's it).
4GB Corsair DDR2
Some 160 gig Seagate HD I had laying around
nVidia 9600GT
24 inch BenQ LCD

awe, you should build them as a side local non-official job! its fun ^_^
[link] that is The Beast, what took me two years to save up for, and half a year of researching and updating (was my first up-to-date build, everything before this one was from 2003 or before, when tech was rather universally compatible haha)

you got a good build ^_^ bet it runs smoooth

You made some interesting parts decisions there I wouldn't necessarily have agreed with if you showed me the parts list before you bought everything, but most of it is matters of taste. Not a fan of the window/lights on a case, I think Plextor's cost too much for what you get out of a DVD drive, and I probably wouldn't have gone AMD at the time. All things considered though, everything looks solid and runs well, so if you're happy with it that's all that matters. :D

I've had a few people want me to build computers for them, but I generally refuse, as that makes me tech support. It's probably decent money, but I've always viewed the computer as more of a occasional hobby than anything I'd want to seriously make money off of. I'm always more than happy to show someone how to build their own and help them pick parts, though.
:icontreeclimber:
I've only built/repaired for friends as a hobby myself, made small amounts of money out of it, but I don't mind being tech support haha.

The reason for the Plextor, was that I bought a Sony, that ended up a dud and was beyond the Newegg return policy time, so my geek of a buddy who does build pcs for a living, just gave me the brand-new-still-in-a-box Plextor! I wasn't going to argue O.o

The main reason for wanting the window/lights in the casing, was so I could use the body for secondary lighting rather than waste more electricity by having a lightbulb on behind/near me as I very well know how monitors/screens in the dark can really ruin your vision.

Just built my Dad his comp a few months ago, knowing he wasn't a fan of the lights or giant monster of a case idea, I gave him the mid-tower powder black generic with extra bays. The main difference between mine and his, was that he gave me a budget to work with, whereas I knew I'd be spending a lot and only wanted parts I wouldn't have to upgrade for five or so years.

It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.
